This past weekend, Hope and I were in Houston to attend her first dance convention of the season. This is her second season of competitive dance so I still feel like we are rookies! Definitely still learning as we go!
I thought it would be fun to share a glimpse into what a day in the life of a dance mom looks like!
Hope and I drove into Houston late Friday evening so 5 am came super early Saturday morning! #thethingswedoforourkids I got up and got myself dressed and then woke her up to get ready for a full day of dance!
Mike surprised her by packing a box of Girl Scout cookies with a sweet card to start her day. Definite brownie points for Dad!
We were both dressed and ready by 6:45 am. We stopped at the hotel restaurant downstairs and grabbed a bite of breakfast before meeting her group at 7:20 am.
We went to the Welcome Show and then this sweet girl was ready for a day of dance!
Hope’s morning dance schedule included an hour of ballet, an hour of learning a contemporary audition combo followed by a scholarship audition, an hour hip hop class, and an hour of contemporary ballet.
After I got her settled into her room, I went back up to our hotel room to do a little work!
I worked a couple of hours and then had to run to the Apple store because I forgot my chargers at home! #ugh And, yes, I am watching Disney Junior! haha! After my quick Apple run, I peeked into Hope’s room to make sure she was doing good and then used my Chick-fil-A app to order her lunch. She had a quick 30-minute window to eat and I didn’t want her waiting for me.
She enjoyed a carpet picnic with what seemed like a few hundred other girls! And, see all those bare feet? Not sure I’ve ever smelt something so funky in all my life!
And, in case you were wondering where the rest of our family were… they were enjoying a nice, lazy Saturday at home! They sent me this pic from brunch.
Meanwhile, back at the dance convention… Hope’s afternoon consisted of an hour of tap and ended with her favorite class – an hour of jazz funk! She told me it was Hip Hop funk but I’m going by the description that was on the schedule!
During this two hour window, I grabbed a bite to eat (and maybe had a margarita!) and made a quick return at Nordstroms. I’ll never complain when a dance convention hosts their event at a hotel attached to a mall!!!
After I picked Hope up from class, we made a quick stop at Clair’s (she had a gift card from Christmas burning a hole in her pocket) and then we went back to our room to catch our breath before it was time for her to get ready to perform.
She had to be dressed and ready at 4:30 pm. We definitely underestimated the amount of time it would take to get ready and cut this one super close but we made it!
Her team had two dances: Black Cat (jazz) and Pump It Up (hip-hop). Both routines looked great – especially considering it was their first performances of the year. Black Cat was fun but they had a blast dancing to Pump It Up! Nothing but pure joy on that stage!!!
After the girls danced, we joined a few other families for a fun dinner at the Rainforest Cafe. So much fun letting the girls (and parents!) enjoy themselves!
After dinner, we went back to the Awards Show.
Their studio took home a few awards but we were most excited when Hope’s team won a Standout Routine award for Pump It Up and were invited to attend Nationals! Needless to say, the girls were PUMPED!!!
Awards lasted till a little after 10 pm – remember, we’ve been up since 5 am so needless to say, Hope was ready for bed!
I laid her in my lap to clean off her make-up and she ended up falling asleep before I could finish! Sweet girl had a long day!
Hope loves dancing and seeing the joy on her face when she hits the stage makes all the early mornings and late nights worth it! Now to get ready for her next performance!!!
Monday morning came bright and early and we were all dragging after the dance weekend AND the Super Bowl. Tears started to flow and when I asked her what was the matter, her response was, “I just miss the weekend!” Bless it! Sweet girl loves to dance and we have been blessed with the sweetest dance team! Good thing we only have to wait until next weekend to do it all over again!
I’m linking up with Kristy and her friends for their Daily Dime link party! It’s a fun twist on Day in the Life posts – sharing your day in ten pictures (that’s the dime part!)! Thanks for the fun idea, girls!
